My Journey Out of Personal Chaos and Craziness

By Mike Kotsis, June 6, 2019

Jill and I are passionate about helping couples live purposeful lives by embracing a simple set of tools and a holistic way of viewing their lives. When we began living this way in our own family, it changed the course of our lives forever. It was a painful journey that led from chaos and crisis to freedom and fulfillment.

Now we feel called to help others do the same. Here’s the story of my journey to a great life. Let me know if it sounds familiar to you.

Professional Chaos and Personal Crises

In my mid-twenties, I suddenly found myself running the family business that my grandfather had started in the early 1900s. When I joined the team in 2005, the company needed a turnaround. I didn’t have much experience, but I was willing to learn and dig in. It was on me to continue a 100-year-plus family legacy—and to help my father and uncles retire comfortably.

So I dug in. I learned a lot about the business, my family and myself. Most notably, I learned that I can’t save the world alone. I tried, though—so much that my health suffered and tensions invaded my marriage to Jill (who had joined me in the family business).

I was taking on too much, but I didn’t know how to stop. The stress weakened my immune system and I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease. I lost over 50 pounds in one month, and I lost mobility in my hands and lower legs. It was a terrifying experience…but it was enlightening at the same time.

Time to Ask Tough Questions

I was forced to stop, reflect and reevaluate what I was doing: trying to place the weight of the world on my shoulders alone. I realized that I was my own biggest obstacle in turning the business around, and that I needed to get out of the way. The company needed a team and a system in place so that it wasn’t dependent on me alone.

Once we accomplished those two things, we saw the business grow profitably during the worst of Michigan’s economic downturn. The company was finally experiencing the forward momentum I’d been trying to accomplish.

And through all of this I discovered that I had a calling to help people and businesses in a deeper way, although I didn’t know what that would look like, yet.

Professional and Personal Turnaround

While searching for direction, I stumbled upon a life plan I’d written in college and forgotten about. As I shared it with Jill, we were surprised how much of it had been accomplished.

I had an epiphany: all this time, I had been trying to fit my life around my career. I never sat down with my wife to plan out what we wanted our lives to look like, and find a career that would serve our goals.

Jill and I defined our life plan on paper. This helped us to filter out most of the career opportunities I was looking at, because they wouldn’t support the kind of life we wanted. It also helped to clarify what the right path would look like.

That exercise led me to become an EOS Implementer™, helping entrepreneurial leadership teams get everything they want from their businesses. As I pursued that path professionally, Jill and I continued to be 100% in alignment every step of the way. Because of the life plan we created and the tools we were using, we were able to stay on the same page together. I was now living an intentional life that brought freedom and fulfillment.

But that wasn’t always the case for my clients.

Helping Others Achieve Their Personal Best

By this time I was helping leadership teams to enjoy the EOS Life™, which includes time to pursue other passions. But many of the leaders around the table were still living chaotic personal lives.

Considering our personal experience of living a more purposeful life, I wondered if Jill and I could help other couples experience a similar transformation—taking their families from Good to Great.

After some thinking, dreaming and a lot of planning, we designed a course called The Purposeful Family Manager. The course helps couples to become their best by discovering and achieving their potential and living the life they love. We have now had the privilege of successfully helping over 100 couples on the journey of living the lives they want.

Justin and Stephanie Gailitis went through the course. “We were letting life happen to us with no time to catch our breath,” they said. “We joined Purposeful Family Manager to find some sense of purpose, passion, and calmness. This has been the X-factor for us reaching some important financial and personal goals.”

Joe Meyecic agreed. “Purposeful Family Manager has helped us add a structure to our life where problems are solved better and faster,” he said.
